Project Description
ELEGANT, lead by the UPC, aims to revolutionize connectivity through the deployment of an advanced 5G infrastructure. This ambitious initiative focuses on enhancing inter-campus communication and enabling cutting-edge research in next-generation wireless technologies.
Key Features of ELEGANT:
1. Multitechnology Integration:
ELEGANT leverages a comprehensive platform encompassing fixed, cellular, wireless, IoT, and millimeter-wave technologies. The network will utilize 5G legacy elements and extend to B5G and 6G, operating on new frequency bands with innovative modulation schemes and increased bandwidths.
2. Dual 5G-Core:
The infrastructure will feature two B5G/6G nodes interconnected via a 100 Gbps DWDM link with 1+1 protection, ensuring robust and resilient communication. This setup includes geo-redundancy, allowing seamless service continuity even in the event of node failure.
3. Expanded Mobile System:
Each campus will be equipped with advanced base stations and radio units, including:
-
- Three base stations in the FR1
- Two base stations in FR2
- Additional BBU units
- Core 5G SA nodes with enhanced geo-redundancy
4. Ultra-Low Latency Network:
A critical goal of the ELEGANT project is to achieve ultra-low latency, essential for B5G/6G services. The network aims for a latency below 0.1 ms, ensuring real-time performance for applications like autonomous vehicles and smart city solutions.
5. High Capacity Mesh Reconfigurable Network:
Optical fiber based fixed network providing support to 5G/6G mobile services and high capacity up to 32.000 Gigas by DWDM links across a 35 km to 200 km reconfigurable network, offering different mesh, ring, and tree topologies.
6. Research and Experimentation:
The infrastructure is designed to support extensive research and experimentation towards 6G, including handover tests in diverse conditions. It will operate in a basic service mode while allowing for advanced experiments in radio access and network performance optimization.
