Technology

The infrastructure of the ELEGANT project, as a continuation and update of the 6G-OpenLab project, combines a wide range of advanced technologies for the deployment and evaluation of 5G and future 6G communication services. This architecture includes transport equipment such as ROADMs (Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers), optical splitters, two routers dedicated to 5G traffic, two 5G core networks, two data centers (located respectively at the North Campus and the Baix Llobregat Campus), optical switches, and 5G antennas operating in both FR1 and FR2 bands.

The infrastructure is interconnected through a fiber optic network that links the two participating campuses and all network components, ensuring latency below 1 millisecond. At the North Campus, a redundant fiber optic ring has been deployed to enhance robustness against potential connection or equipment failures.

In addition, measurement and test equipment is available for validating and optimizing network performance, including high-speed oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, mobile test terminals, and tools for analyzing optical and radio traffic.

Below is a general logical diagram of the joint infrastructure of the ELEGANT and 6G-OpenLab projects, highlighting the key technologies and core connections.
