Background
Initially, the goal was to develop a 5G infrastructure project to advance research and experimentation towards 6G. In 2022, a project called 6G-OpenLab received funding from the European Union. In 2023, ELEGANT also secured European funding and aimed to improve and update the 6G-OpenLab project by enhancing various aspects, such as installing fiber everywhere and incorporating the new 26 GHz frequency band. The goal was to create a more comprehensive project that brings us closer to 6G.
Moreover, while there are several European projects with similar structures, ELEGANT distinguishes itself with several unique features:
- Fiber Optic Connection between Campus: A 32 km fiber optic link between the Castelldefels and Barcelona campuses.
- Ultra-Low Latency: Less than 1 ms latency.
- All Connectivity via Fiber Optics: Ensures high-speed and reliable connections.
- Dual 5G Cores: One in each campus, providing robustness and resilience against potential failures.
Additionally, there are European projects scheduled to test the network once the system is fully set up, such as the 6G-EWOC, you can visit their website using the button below:
